Trooping the Colour 2026 transport and chauffeur guide
Trooping the Colour falls on Saturday 13 June 2026. The Mall, Horse Guards Road, Birdcage Walk, Constitution Hill and Whitehall close from early morning until mid-afternoon. No vehicle can drop off at Horse Guards Parade. The Household Division states: there are no parking or drop-off facilities in Whitehall or the surrounding areas. The Whitehall Gate closes at 10:00. A chauffeur who pre-agrees drop-off points outside the closure perimeter is the only way to arrive by private car. This guide covers the road closure footprint, viable drop-off and collection points, tickets, dress code and the connection to the Cartier Queen's Cup Final the following day.
Trooping the Colour 2026: date, time and what happens
Date: Saturday 13 June 2026. Location: Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall, London SW1A 2AX. The Royal Procession leaves Buckingham Palace at approximately 10:40. The parade begins on Horse Guards at 10:30. King Charles III takes the salute from an Ascot Landau carriage with Queen Camilla, following the precedent set in 2024 and 2025 after his cancer diagnosis. The 41-gun salute fires from Green Park at approximately noon. The RAF flypast over Buckingham Palace is at 13:00, followed by the Royal Family's balcony appearance.
Over 1,350 soldiers of the Household Division and King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery form the parade, with 300+ musicians from the Massed Bands. A further 250 service personnel line The Mall. Approximately 200 horses take part. The 2026 Colour being trooped is the King's Colour of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards (King's Company). The ceremony is broadcast live on BBC One from 10:20. Total duration runs from approximately 10:30 to 13:15 including the flypast.
The ceremony dates to 1748 and has marked the Sovereign's official birthday annually since George III's accession in 1760, moved to June by Edward VII because his November birthday brought poor weather.
Road closures on Trooping the Colour day
Fully closed from approximately 05:00 to 15:00: The Mall (Admiralty Arch to Buckingham Palace), Horse Guards Road, Horse Guards Parade, Birdcage Walk (Buckingham Gate to Great George Street), Constitution Hill (Hyde Park Corner to Queen Victoria Memorial), Marlborough Road, Spur Road, Cleveland Row, Stable Yard and Queen's Gardens. These closures are imposed by the Metropolitan Police under operational royal security powers, not as a published traffic order.
Rolling closures from approximately 08:00: Whitehall from Trafalgar Square south to Parliament Square restricts from 08:00. The Whitehall Gate to Horse Guards Parade closes at 10:00 sharp. Parliament Street and Parliament Square approaches restrict during mounted regiment transit. Trafalgar Square, Cockspur Street and Pall Mall East close periodically for cavalry movement and crowd control. Northumberland Avenue faces short closures. Pall Mall restricts as carriages assemble at St James's Palace.
Reopen time: All closures typically lift between 14:00 and 16:00 once troops return to barracks and Metropolitan Police complete sweeps. No formal reopen time is published in advance. Check tfl.gov.uk and the Met Police newsroom in the 48 hours before the parade.
Bus diversions: Routes 3, 11, 12, 24, 53, 87, 88, 159 and 453 are diverted from approximately 05:00 to 15:00. Bus stops on Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and Victoria corridors are out of service. All Tube stations remain open. Westminster, Embankment, Charing Cross, St James's Park and Green Park operate normally throughout. National Rail at Charing Cross, Victoria and Waterloo runs as scheduled.

Where a chauffeur can drop off and collect
For north and east stand entrances (via Whitehall Gate, closes 10:00): The closest practical drop-off is Spring Gardens, SW1A 2BN, near Q-Park Trafalgar. This is 6 to 8 minutes' walk to Horse Guards via Whitehall. Embankment Place and Northumberland Avenue (WC2N 6NU) work for guests staying at the Corinthia London or The Royal Horseguards, at 7 to 9 minutes' walk. Waterloo Place at Lower Regent Street is 8 to 10 minutes via Pall Mall to the Horse Guards Arch.
For south stand entrances (via Birdcage Walk and Great George Street): The closest drop-off is Petty France, SW1H, at 5 to 7 minutes' walk. Great Smith Street and Storey's Gate (SW1P) are alternatives. Victoria Street near Westminster Cathedral serves guests at the Conrad or St James' Court hotels.
For The Mall standing spectators and Buckingham Palace flypast: Waterloo Place at the Duke of York Steps puts spectators on The Mall in 4 minutes, best for procession viewing near Admiralty Arch. Grosvenor Place, SW1X (Belgravia side of Hyde Park Corner) is 8 minutes to the Palace railings via Green Park, best for the flypast and balcony viewing at 13:00. Piccadilly near Green Park station is an alternative for the Palace end.
Collection strategy: Pre-agree a precise location using What3Words or a pin-drop before leaving your hotel. Central London mobile networks become congested with over 100,000 spectators along the parade route. Collection is realistic from approximately 13:30 for flypast watchers and 14:30 for Horse Guards ticket-holders. A chauffeur dropping at 08:30 and collecting at 14:00 should budget for 45 minutes of empty running each way during the closure window because cross-river diversions via Vauxhall Bridge or Waterloo Bridge add considerable distance. The driver cannot wait in the closure zone. Agree the collection point before the ceremony, not after it, when phone signal may be unreliable and 8,000 people are leaving Horse Guards simultaneously.
Tickets and how to get them
Seated grandstand tickets (approximately 8,000 seats) are allocated by online ballot at kbp.army.mod.uk. The 2026 ballot closed at midday on Friday 27 March 2026. Each applicant could request 1 to 4 tickets. Standing and wheelchair tickets went on direct sale from 30 March at £10 to £30. The parade is heavily oversubscribed every year. Free viewing is available from The Mall and the north-east corner of St James's Park, arriving by 08:00 to 09:00 for any chance of a front-rank position.
If you missed the ballot: The Colonel's Review on Saturday 6 June 2026 uses the same parade ground, the same 1,350+ troops, the same road closures and the same processional route. Tickets are £15 on direct sale with no ballot. There is no flypast and no gun salute. The King does not take the salute in person (a Royal Colonel does). But the military spectacle is identical. The Major General's Review on Saturday 30 May 2026 (tickets £10) is one step further removed. Both rehearsals are genuine alternatives, not consolation prizes. The chauffeur logistics are the same for all three events.
Driving to Trooping the Colour from Heathrow
Route from Heathrow: M4 to A4 (Great West Road), then Cromwell Road, then Knightsbridge, then Hyde Park Corner. From Hyde Park Corner, divert via Grosvenor Place or Park Lane to Piccadilly to reach drop-off points north of The Mall. Do not attempt Constitution Hill, The Mall or Birdcage Walk at any point on Trooping day. Premium Transfers' Hayes base is 4 miles from Heathrow. Saturday morning transit to central London takes 45 to 70 minutes outside of event closures. Once closures are live, add 15 to 25 minutes for routing around the dead zone. The return journey after collection (14:00 onwards) is typically faster because closures are lifting and Saturday afternoon traffic on the M4 corridor is lighter than weekday equivalents.
Congestion Charge on Saturdays: The CCZ operates 12:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays at £18. A chauffeur dropping off at 08:30 and clearing the zone before noon pays zero Congestion Charge. This saves £18 compared to an afternoon return inside the zone. All Premium Transfers vehicles are ULEZ compliant. ULEZ operates 24/7 at £12.50 for non-compliant vehicles across all of Greater London.
Dress code and security
Dress code for seated ticket-holders: The Household Division requires morning dress or lounge suit for gentlemen, and equivalent formal wear for ladies. No denim, shorts or sandals. Hats are recommended. Gentlemen remove hats as the Colour passes and during the Royal Salute. Umbrellas and parasols are prohibited in the stands because they frighten horses and block views. Standing spectators on The Mall have no formal dress code but smart dress is the norm.
Security: Police search all personal belongings at checkpoints. Prohibited items include knives, drones, large bags and alcohol. The Household Division warns that bulky items could mean missing the event entirely. The Whitehall Gate closes at 10:00. All other entrances close by 11:00. Late arrivals are not admitted. Allow a minimum of 50 minutes for the walk from your drop-off point and security checks. A realistic on-foot arrival window is 08:45 to 09:30.
The June royal season: 13 to 20 June 2026
Three events in nine days. Trooping the Colour on Saturday 13 June in central London. The Cartier Queen's Cup Final at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 14 June in Windsor Great Park (7 miles from Heathrow). Royal Ascot from Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 June in Berkshire (6 miles from Heathrow). The same audience, the same sponsors, and the same royal attendance cross all three events.
An hourly hire with the same driver across this period covers central London (Trooping, Saturday morning), Windsor Great Park (polo, Sunday afternoon) and Ascot Racecourse (racing, Tuesday to Saturday). For international visitors arriving at Heathrow for Trooping weekend, a Mayfair hotel for Saturday transitions to a Berkshire base (Coworth Park or Fairmont Windsor Park) from Sunday through to the following Saturday. The driver who learns the cadence of the week handles the logistics. The guest handles the week.
Trooping Saturday. Polo Sunday. Ascot all week.
One driver, one car, nine days. Fixed pricing with no surge. The same S-Class or Range Rover from Trooping through to Royal Ascot Saturday.
