Farnborough Airport: the private jet passenger guide

Farnborough Airport (FAB/EGLF) is the UK's only airport dedicated entirely to business aviation, 37 miles southwest of Central London. A chauffeur transfer to Mayfair takes 45–55 minutes off-peak. The FBO has been rated #1 in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific for 19 consecutive years by Aviation International News. This guide covers the arrival experience, ground transport, journey times to specific London destinations, and what to arrange before you fly.

Farnborough is not a commercial airport with a private wing attached. It handles only business aviation. No airlines, no scheduled flights, no check-in desks, no baggage carousels. The entire operation exists to move private jet passengers from aircraft to car (or car to aircraft) in minutes, not hours.

The airport sits off the A331 (Blackwater Valley Road) with direct access to the M3 at Junction 4. The M3 corridor connects to Central London via the A316 through Twickenham and Richmond, joining the A4 at Chiswick. This route avoids the M25 entirely for most London destinations.

What happens when you land

Your chauffeur is already waiting. A competent operator tracks your aircraft by tail number, not by flight number. Private jets do not operate with commercial flight numbers in the conventional sense. Your chauffeur monitors the approach in real time and is positioned at the airport before touchdown. The vehicle is climate-set, with water and Wi-Fi ready.

Customs is private and fast. On-site UK Border Force processes international arrivals inside the FBO terminal. No shared hall, no queue behind 300 passengers from a 747. The security screening was upgraded in 2024 with a £3 million investment in C3-rated equipment. You keep laptops in your bag and carry liquids up to 2 litres without removing them.

Most passengers never enter the terminal. This is the defining feature of Farnborough. Roughly 65% of arrivals go directly from aircraft steps to car. Your vehicle can be driven onto the apron, positioned at the foot of the stairs, and you step off the aircraft into the rear seat. Ramp access requires the chauffeur company to hold comprehensive airside insurance (typically £50 million+) and pre-register the vehicle and driver with the airport. Not every operator qualifies. If your chauffeur company cannot confirm airside access, they do not regularly serve Farnborough.

If you do enter the terminal, the FBO is designed as a private members' club. Lounges with panoramic runway views. Private meeting rooms with video conferencing and catering. Barista coffee. The Edmiston Lounge (a 2025 partnership with the superyacht brokerage) features curated artwork and yacht models. The Lugano Lounge displays diamonds from Lugano Diamonds, with an ambassador available. Gaming consoles are provided for younger travellers. A vet is on-site for passengers arriving with pets under the Pet Travel Scheme.

Total time from touchdown to moving: typically under 15 minutes. Your chauffeur handles luggage, confirms the route and estimated arrival time, and you are on the M3 before the aircraft has taxied to its parking stand.

What happens when you depart

Departure is the reverse, and faster. Your chauffeur drives you to the terminal entrance. A concierge greets you and handles luggage. If your operator has ramp access, the car drives directly to the aircraft steps. You step out of the rear seat, walk up the stairs, and the aircraft is ready.

There are no check-in desks, no boarding gates, and no boarding passes. Security screening takes minutes with the upgraded C3 equipment. If you arrive early, the FBO lounges are available with full business facilities, Wi-Fi, and catering. Total time from car door to cabin seat: typically 10–15 minutes.

The airport opened a second entrance in recent years for the use of passengers and crew, allowing even faster access to the terminal. Your chauffeur should know which entrance to use based on the FBO's instruction for that day.

The route. Experienced chauffeurs take the M3/A316 corridor. From the airport, the A331 connects to the M3 at Junction 4. The M3 runs north past the M25 at Junction 2 and becomes the A316 at Sunbury-on-Thames: a three-lane dual carriageway through Twickenham and Richmond into Chiswick. The route joins the A4 and continues into Knightsbridge via Cromwell Road or Mayfair via Hyde Park Corner. This avoids the M25 entirely.

When to fly. Arrivals before 7am or after 8pm get the best road conditions: 40–50 minutes to Mayfair. Morning rush (7:00–9:30am) and evening rush (4:00–7:00pm) add 20–35 minutes. The M3 northbound between Junction 4 and Junction 2 is the primary congestion point. The A316 through Twickenham adds traffic-light delays that do not appear on motorway routing apps.

The Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge is the closest major hotel from Farnborough because the M3/A316 route passes directly through Knightsbridge. Claridge's, The Dorchester, and The Ritz are 5–10 minutes further into Mayfair. The Corinthia London and The Savoy add another 10 minutes beyond that.

Congestion hotspots to know. The M3 northbound between Junction 4 and Junction 2 slows during morning rush. The A316 through Twickenham has traffic-light delays that navigation apps consistently underestimate. The Hammersmith and Chiswick roundabout adds 5–10 minutes during peak hours. Hyde Park Corner is the final bottleneck before Mayfair. An experienced Farnborough chauffeur knows when to divert through Richmond Park or take the Hogarth Lane cut-through at Chiswick to avoid the worst of it.

Destinations beyond Central London

The Wentworth corridor. Sunningdale, Virginia Water, Ascot, and Wentworth sit 10–14 miles from the airport, 15–25 minutes by road. Wentworth Estate's own marketing cites Farnborough Airport as 13 miles away. Royal Ascot racecourse is 12 miles, 14–20 minutes. Passengers heading to the Wentworth Club, Guards Polo Club, or Queenwood are closer to Farnborough than to any other London-area airport. This corridor is one of the UK's wealthiest residential areas, and many Farnborough passengers are heading here rather than Central London.

Hampshire and Berkshire. Windsor Castle is 17–20 miles, 25–36 minutes. Highclere Castle (the Downton Abbey filming location) is 25 miles, 35–45 minutes. The New Forest at Lyndhurst is 50 miles, 55–65 minutes. Winchester sits 34 miles south, 38–44 minutes.

Connecting to Heathrow. Farnborough to Heathrow is 23–27 miles, 27–35 minutes off-peak via the M3 and a short section of the M25. For passengers connecting to a commercial flight, this is a practical and well-routed transfer. Our base near Heathrow means we know both airports thoroughly.

Staying near the airport. The Aviator Hampshire sits on the airport perimeter, part of the Farnborough Airport ecosystem. 169 rooms with runway views, designed by Robin Partington (the architect behind The Gherkin). Rated among the top UK hotels on TripAdvisor. For passengers staying overnight before a morning departure, the Aviator is a two-minute drive from the terminal. Further afield, Coworth Park (Dorchester Collection) is 20 minutes away, and Pennyhill Park in Bagshot is roughly 15 minutes.

How to arrange ground transport

What your PA or charter broker should provide. The chauffeur company needs four things: the aircraft tail number, the estimated landing time, the number of passengers, and the luggage count (including oversized items like golf clubs or ski bags). The tail number is critical because that is how the chauffeur tracks the flight. A company that asks for a "flight number" does not regularly serve private aviation airports.

What to expect from a competent operator. Real-time tail number tracking from the moment the aircraft enters UK airspace. Pre-positioning at the airport 30+ minutes before landing. A vehicle in showroom condition with climate pre-set. Meet and greet inside the FBO or at the aircraft steps. 60 minutes of free waiting time from touchdown. Confirmation updates sent to the passenger or PA when the chauffeur is on-site and when the passenger is in the vehicle.

What to check before booking. Does the operator hold airside insurance for Farnborough? Can they drive to the aircraft steps, or only to the terminal door? Do they track by tail number? What is their free waiting time? A 30-minute allowance is tight for international arrivals clearing customs. 60 minutes is the private aviation standard. Anything less suggests a company more accustomed to Heathrow Terminal 5 than to an FBO apron.

Multi-vehicle and security arrangements. Delegations of 4–8 passengers are common at Farnborough. A typical configuration pairs an S-Class for the principal with a V-Class for the wider party. For passengers requiring close protection, the chauffeur company should be able to coordinate with your security team on route planning, vehicle positioning, and communications protocol. The chauffeur should carry a mobile number for the FBO handler and your security lead, not just the passenger's PA.

Last-minute changes are normal. Private aviation schedules shift constantly. A departure planned for 14:00 may move to 16:30 after a meeting runs long. A landing estimated at 11:00 may arrive at 09:45 because of tailwinds. Your chauffeur company must be able to absorb these changes without penalties or rebooking fees. This is standard at operators who serve Farnborough regularly. It is not standard at minicab companies marketing themselves as chauffeur services.

What is included in a Farnborough chauffeur transfer

Included as standard at Premium Transfers:

  • Professional chauffeur in business attire, DBS-checked
  • Real-time aircraft tracking by tail number
  • Pre-positioned at the airport 30+ minutes before landing
  • Meet and greet inside the FBO terminal (ramp access on request)
  • 60 minutes of free waiting time from touchdown
  • Luggage handling from aircraft or terminal to vehicle
  • Wi-Fi, USB charging, bottled water
  • Child seats on request at no extra charge
  • All parking included in the quoted fare
  • ULEZ-compliant vehicles

Vehicle choice depends on party size and luggage. A Mercedes S-Class S580 suits one to two passengers with standard luggage: rear massage seats, privacy blinds, a cabin quiet enough to take a call at 70mph on the M3. A V-Class Jet Class carries up to six passengers with conference-style seating, suited to delegations or families arriving together. A Range Rover Autobiography handles both passengers and oversized luggage (golf clubs, ski equipment, multiple large cases) with ground clearance for rural estate driveways in Surrey and Hampshire.

Recent developments at Farnborough

Flexjet European Private Terminal (opening early 2026). Flexjet is building a 2,098 sq m ramp-side terminal at Farnborough, the first private terminal by a fractional ownership company outside North America. The facility includes 138 solar panels and EV charging points. Flexjet members will have a dedicated facility separate from the main FBO.

Domus III hangar (opened June 2024). A £55 million, 175,000 sq ft four-bay hangar that increased the airport's hangar capacity by 70%. An additional 125,000 sq ft of apron space brings total ramp area above 1 million sq ft. The investment signals confidence in continued growth of UK business aviation.

Farnborough International Airshow 2026. The next airshow runs 20–24 July 2026 (five trade days, no public days). FIA is the world's second-largest airshow after Paris, alternating biennially. During Airshow week, local roads (A325, A31, A331) experience severe congestion and journey times to London can double. Chauffeur bookings for the Airshow period should be made well in advance, and allow 30+ minutes extra journey time above the normal estimates.

Sustainability leadership. Farnborough was the first business aviation airport worldwide to achieve carbon neutral status in 2018. It holds ACA Level 4+ accreditation, the highest carbon certification available to airports. A 2025 deal with Hydrogen Refinery will supply 12.5 million litres (10,000 tonnes) of sustainable aviation fuel per year, potentially making Farnborough the first airport to offer a 20% SAF blend by 2028. Solar panels on site generate 25% of the airport's own electricity.

Farnborough's advantage is the combination of a long runway (accommodating G650 and Global 7500), the award-winning FBO, and exclusively private operations. Biggin Hill is closer to South and East London but has a shorter runway and relies on the A21 and A232, which are unpredictable for journey times. Luton and Stansted offer 24/7 operations, making them the default for flights arriving or departing outside Farnborough's curfew.

For passengers heading to West London, Mayfair, Knightsbridge, or the Surrey and Berkshire corridor, Farnborough is the logical choice. For the City of London or Canary Wharf, Biggin Hill or London City's jet centre may offer a faster road transfer. Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Farnborough Airport to Central London?

45–75 minutes depending on destination and traffic. Knightsbridge is 40–50 minutes off-peak. Mayfair is 45–55 minutes. The City of London is 55–70 minutes. Rush hour (7:00–9:30am and 4:00–7:00pm) adds 20–35 minutes to each estimate. The preferred route is the M3/A316 corridor, which avoids the M25.

Can my chauffeur drive directly to the aircraft at Farnborough?

Yes. Farnborough permits approved chauffeur vehicles to drive directly onto the apron and park at the aircraft steps. This requires the operator to hold comprehensive airside insurance (typically £50 million+), pre-register the vehicle and driver, and be escorted through the airside area. Not all operators qualify. Ask before you book.

Is Farnborough Airport only for private jets?

Yes. Farnborough is the UK's only airport dedicated entirely to business aviation. No commercial airlines operate from the airport. No scheduled flights. Every movement is a private or corporate aircraft. The airport handles approximately 33,000 movements per year with a planning cap of 50,000.

What are Farnborough Airport's opening hours?

Monday to Friday 07:00–22:00. Saturday, Sunday, and bank holidays 08:00–20:00. The airport is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. No overtime extensions are available, unlike some other UK airports. Flights outside these hours must use Luton, Stansted, or Biggin Hill.

What is the sat-nav postcode for Farnborough Airport?

GU14 0LJ. The airport recommends this postcode over the official registered address postcode (GU14 6XA) because it routes more accurately to the terminal entrance. The airport is accessed from the A331 (Blackwater Valley Road).

Can I fly with my dog to Farnborough Airport?

Yes. Farnborough is approved under the UK Pet Travel Scheme with an on-site vet and Pet Travel Scheme Support Officer. Dogs, cats, and ferrets can travel. The airport is one of only four London-area private aviation airports approved for pet imports. All standard PETS documentation requirements apply.

How much does a chauffeur from Farnborough to London cost?

A Mercedes E-Class costs £185–£245+VAT. An S-Class costs £215–£275+VAT. A Range Rover Autobiography costs £275–£350+VAT. All prices are for a one-way transfer to Central London and include meet and greet, tail number tracking, 60 minutes of free waiting time, and all parking charges. The Farnborough premium over Heathrow transfers reflects the greater distance and the specialised FBO coordination required.

What happens during the Farnborough Airshow?

The Farnborough International Airshow 2026 runs 20–24 July. It is the world's second-largest airshow. During Airshow week, local roads (A325, A31, A331) experience severe congestion and journey times to London can double. The airport continues private jet operations during the event, but road access is significantly affected. Book chauffeur transfers well in advance and allow at least 30 minutes of extra travel time.
